(SEZ). SEZ has an over 25 years’ experience in facilitating knowledge transfer between Baden-Württemberg and Europe, having supported over thousand European research and cooperation projects. The SEZ, moreover, has yearlong experience in organizing workshops, conferences and brokerage events for technology transfer, as well as finding partners for research and innovation proposals.

Core activities:

  • to assist SMEs and research organizations to participate in European R&D projects

  • to promote transnational technology transfer

  • to support the management of international research projects

  • to coordinate support actions and cluster activities as well as future strategies

  • to stimulate and support the innovation process in industrial companies, focused on SMEs

Role in project:

S2i coordinates the project and therefore leads WP5 on project management. Moreover, S2i will be in charge of communication activities and develop a coaching toolbox for the transfer and implementation of selected innovations in wood mobilisation. S2i is part of the ROSEWOOD Central Europe Hub.

ProHolzBW

In July 2014, the project „Holzmanagement BW“ was launched with the mission to found a new organisation promoting the usage of wood in Baden-Württemberg. Before this the structure of a cluster management forestry and wood was established in 2008 to start connecting companies, universities and research and development institutes. In December 2014 the company proHolzBW was founded with four shareholders and a partner organization. These are in forestry (Forstkammer Baden-Württemberg, a forest owners association), in the sawmill industry (Deutsche Säge- und Holzindustrie, a sawmill association), in timber construction (Holzbau Baden-Württemberg, Holzbau Baden, 2 timber construction associations) and additionally the state forest company as partner organization. The organization proHolzBW is also supported by the ERDF funding and the regional funding from the ministry of rural affairs in Baden-Württemberg (Holz-Innovativ-Programm).

The official launch of proHolzBW was on 1st October 2015 with the following targets to foster the usage of wood:

Target 1: Strengthen the cooperation within the value chain forestry and wood

Target 2: Communicate topics of the forestry and timber construction to the target groups

Target 3: Connect interests of public and private investors, architects and planners with the forestry and timber construction industry.

Target groups are investors, architects, planners, the public sector, and universities, companies of the value chain forestry and wood, engineers, housing societies, politics on regional and federal state level. Fields of activities: connecting, informing, promoting, and consulting in the sector of forestry and wood. The organization is structured in four different fields: Cluster management, Consulting for timber construction and Marketing.

Role in project:

proHolzBW is in charge of managing the Regional Wood Mobilisation Hub for Central Europe. In this role proHolzBW supports the clustering and networking between regions.

The Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luonnonvarakeskus, Luke) was launched 1 of January 2015 as a merger of MTT Agrifood Research Finland, Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla), Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute and the statistical services of the Information Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

Natural Resources Institute Finland is a nonprofit public research organisation, the second largest research institute in Finland and one of the biggest clusters of bioeconomy expertise in Europe. Luke operates in 38 different locations across the country and employs ca. 1,300 person-years.

Luke develops knowledge-based solution models and services for its customers and added value for sustainable and competitive business activities based on renewable natural resources, and supports decision making in the society. The strategic impact areas are new biobased products and business activities, productivity through digital solutions, regional vitality by the circular economy, wellbeing from immaterial values, and healthy and profitable food production. In Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland, Luke’s forest experts are specialized e.g. in GIS, logistics, forest energy, sustainable forest management, forest regeneration, forest health, climate change, nature-based tourism, ecosystem services, circular economy and green economics.

Role in project:

In ROSEWOOD Luke is leading WP2 Development of new business opportunities among the wood mobilisation value chain. Luke also participates in the ROSEWOOD North Europe Hub.

Lapland University of Applied Sciences Ltd. (Lapin AMK, Lapland UAS) is a multidisciplinary higher education institution in Finnish Lapland with 5 500 degree students, 500 employees and 10 M€ annual volume of research, development and innovation activities.

Lapland UAS offers northern specialized education in 22 bachelor’s and 8 master’s degree programs with bioeconomy focus in two bachelor’s degree programs and one master’s degree program. The education in Natural Resources focuses in forestry and agriculture, specializing in issues of diverse and sustainable utilization of northern forest resources and regions as well as issues of reindeer herding. Due to massive amount of primary natural resources in the northern regions, the education and RDI related to natural resources is vital to meet the competence and needs of northern people and livelihood.

The strategic focus of Lapland UAS is on Smart use of natural resources and in Arctic co-operation with cross-sectional strategic focus on Service Business and entrepreneurship.

The Natural Resources RDI team implements research and development in bioeconomy in close co-operation to other RDI teams, education and versatile external networks. In biobased RDI Lapland UAS has close and rewarding co-operation with research institutions, especially with Natural Resources Institute Finland.

Role in project:

LUAS is the ROSEWOOD Hub manager for Northern Europe. In this capacity LUAS is responsible for connecting wood mobilisation stakeholders on the local and on the European level, with the regions involved in the project.

JCyL-DG Medio Natural is the regional department responsible on forestry in the region of Castilla y León (Spain) that is part of the regional ministry of “Development and the Environment” (Fomento y medio ambiente). The regional government is called Junta de Castilla y León (http://www.gobierno.jcyl.es/), organized in 9 regional ministries. Castilla y León is one of the largest regions in Europe and the one with the largest forest area in Spain.

JCyL-DG Medio Natural has full competences in forest management, forest protection (firefighting and forest health), hunting and fishing and conservation of natural values. It is responsible of Forest and Other Wooded Land (FOWL) that cover around 5 million hectares in the region. Forests cover around 3 million hectares, with a high diversity of forest systems, both in Mediterranean and Atlantic conditions. The region has a complete forest program, defined by the Forest Strategy for Castilla y León (1999), the Forest Plan of Castilla y León (2002) and the Forest Law (2009).

JCyL-DG Medio Natural directly manages around 2 million ha of public FOWLs, owned by municipalities, and therefore is one of the largest land managers in Europe, willing to improve its effectiveness in forest management and harvesting. In 2011, the region was one of the first European regions to pass an Action Plan for Bioenergy.

Role in project:

JCYL supports the management of the ROSEWOOD South Europe Hub. With its longstanding expertise in forestry development JCYL will contribute to all project tasks, in particular concerning the implementation of wood mobilisation policies on the regional level.

Centre Régional de la Propriété Forestière NOUVELLE-AQUITAINE (CNPF)

Interfacing between the Public Authorities and the professional bodies for privately owned forests, the CNPF contributes to the development of private forests through advisory and coordination activities, training and knowledge dissemination. As a public body, it is requested by Ministries at national level in different official appliances (National Forest plan especially) to provide expertise on the private forests’ policies, and contribute to their elaboration.

The CNPF integrates 11 Regional delegations - Centres for forest ownership (CRPF) - that are key actors and arms of Regional forest policies, for all issues concerning private forests management. It approves 33 500 forest management plans (3 400 000 hectares).

It comprises a RDI department (Institute for forestry development), that has developed since those last years major strand concerning climate action, resource efficiency, wood mobilisation. It has among others a publishing department (books and review) and a training department.

The CNPF has participated in more than 25 European cooperation projects for these last 10 years. CNPF is involved in the national support group of the Forest technology platform. It supports the Private Forests Union for R&D and European cooperation activities in the Confederation of European Forest Owners (CEPF). It belongs to the Euformag network (www.euformag.eu). The regional delegation Nouvelle Aquitaine will be mainly involved in the activities focused by the Rosewood programme.

Role in project:

In ROSEWOOD the Centre Régional de la Propriété Forestiére Nouvelle-Aquitaine leads the task on mapping the wood mobilisation value chain. CNPF also participates in the ROSEWOOD South Europe Hub.

CESEFOR

CESEFOR is a private non-profit Foundation founded in January 2003. It is a service Centre for the promotion of forestry and forest-based industries, originally within the Region of Castilla y León (one of the 17 Autonomous Regions in Spain) but today with a national and international remit. The Foundation contributes to the regional development and to increasing the competitiveness and the sustainability of forestry industries that use the regional forest resources. In order to do this, Cesefor brings together a range of services: capacity building, consultancy, training and R&D projects.

Role in project:

CESEFOR acts as Hub Manager for the Regional Wood Mobilisation Hub in South Europe. Furthermore, CESEFOR coordinates WP3 on strengthening mobilisation capacity for value-creation.

Slovenian Forestry Institute (SFI), established in 1947, serves the public as the nation's leading forestry research institute. SFI developing the means to understand and quantify the structure and function of forests in Slovenia, aiming at extending the same principles in South-East Europe and on a broader scale, providing the means and practices for international recognition of SFI as an innovative forest research centre.

The specific objects of SFI are to promote ecosystem goods and services, provided by Slovenia's forest resources, to continue and improve traditional close-to-nature sustainable forest management and biodiversity, to foster public understanding of forestry and its importance in Slovenia, to maintain sustainable production capacity, ecosystem resistance to changes under stress and biological diversity – the key factors, ensuring a healthy forest ecosystem, to apply environmentally sound techniques and technologies in forestry, etc. SFI has responsibilities stipulated by the Forest Act (ZG-NPB2), which are relevant to the project.

SFI is a public research institute of national importance, conducting Public Forestry Service of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food and Public Environmental Service of the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning, contributing directly to forestry and environmental protection policies at national level.

Role in project:

SFI is involved in all project tasks, supporting in particular the activities of the ROSEWOOD East Europe Hub for Wood Mobilisation.

Croatian Forest Research Institute (CFRI) is a public research institute and leading national research institution in the scientific field of forestry. It is founded in 1974 and implements top quality scientific research and together with other scientific institutions establishes a scientific infrastructure of the National Innovation System of Science and Higher Education.

Three research pillars are Climate change and forest monitoring; Climate change adaption and forest genetic resources; Social forest services, non-wood forest products and Policy and Governance. CFRI has also important role in raising awareness on the role of forests, protection of forest resources, promotion of sustainable forest management and natural resources as well as promoting cooperation and innovative approaches in sustainable forest management.

One of the CFRI’s primary missions is to build the public awareness and participate in education on the importance of sustainable forest management where we regularly organize activities and events such as international and national scientific and expert conferences, seminars, workshops, annual Open-Door day, etc.

Role in project:

In ROSEWOOD CFRI is involved in all project tasks, supporting in particular the activities of the East Europe Wood Mobilisation Hub, e.g. the selection of regional best practices and the organization of events with local stakeholders.

Region of Tuscany

Tuscany Region is an Italian Regional Government located in the center of Italy. It has direct legislative competences in forest management and forestry. It is Managing Authority of EARDF and ERDF. By acting as Managing Authority, Tuscany Region has a direct competence in allocating resources, fostering innovation and selecting innovative projects and initiatives related with forest and wood resources. Tuscany has a forested surface of about 1.150.000 hectares (source: IFNC 2006), which represents about 51% of the territory. Tuscany Region has a Forest Programme which is currently under revision. Tuscany has also an informative system devoted to forest activities and management.

Since September 2011, Tuscany Region has been coordinating an informal European Network called ERIAFF (European Regions for Innovation in Agriculture, Food and Forestry) which collects the adhesion from 71 European Administrations of regional level from Austria, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom.

Tuscany Region is also committed as lead Region in the development of a S3 AGROFOOD Platform Thematic Partnership focusing on High Tech Farming (Precision Farming) which was kicked-off on 6-7 December 2016 with the support of European Commission DG REGIO and JRC Seville.

Role in project:

In ROSEWOOD the Region of Tuscany coordinates the dissemination and exploitation of the project’s results. The Region of Tuscany is part of the ROSEWOOD South Europe Hub.

PRO WOOD Regional Wood Cluster

PRO WOOD Regional Wood Cluster

The Regional Wood Cluster PRO WOOD is part of the KO-FA Association, established in 2009 as a spin-off of the Regional SME Association, ASIMCOV from Covasna County, building upon over 10 years of experience in support to the wood and furniture industry. It currently gathers 37 SME’s, authorities, catalysts, educational institutions - in total 51 members in the region and has been ensuring the management of the PRO WOOD cluster since 2010. PRO WOOD was the first cluster in the wood processing sector in Romania and the first Romanian cluster in the modern sense of the word and its methodology became a national model, i.e. the Ministry of Economy only recognizes clusters organized in the PRO WOOD manner. In January 2017, the PRO WOOD was awarded with the SILVER certificate by ESCA – European Secretariat for Cluster Analysis and Cluster Excellence.

Besides the common services provided to the members, such as: common marketing, market research, common acquisition of raw materials, joint projects, and common brand, a particular focus of the cluster is enhancing the innovation level of SMEs acting in the sector by means of cooperation within larger European networks in particular in the field of smart furnituring, including cross sectorial (agro, energy etc.) and circular economy approaches.

Role in project:

PRO WOOD is responsible for the organization of study visits to best practices in wood mobilisation and of B2B brokerage events for the forestry and wood sector community. PRO WOOD participates in the ROSEWOOD East Europe Hub.

The University of Applied Sciences Bern (BFH) has about 6’000 enrolled students in six departments located throughout the Canton of Bern, Switzerland. BFH pursues an international strategy for student exchange while at the same time close collaborating with national industry. Graduate students can take advantage of exchange programs as the University of Applied Sciences has multiple agreements with recognized institutions abroad. National industry can profit from joint projects in which our results in applied research are commercialized.

The School of Agriculture, Forest and Food Science (HAFL) as one of the departments of BFH is an accredited training and competence centre for forestry in Switzerland. It plays a central role in the development and implementation of novel solutions in sustainable forest management. Our research and development is innovative, practical and need oriented. We are both nationally- as well as internationally oriented.

Role in project:

BFH supervises the drafting of inter-regional roadmaps for the efficient exploitation of innovations and best practices identified within ROSEWOOD. BFH is part of the ROSEWOOD Central Europe Hub.
